Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers, sits at around 2,650 metres and is one of the most popular stops on any Kashmir trip. Here is a local guide to make the most of it.

The Gulmarg Gondola

The Gondola is one of the highest cable cars in the world and the main highlight. Phase 1 takes you to Kongdoori, and Phase 2 climbs towards Apharwat Peak at around 4,000 metres with sweeping views of snow and valleys. Buy tickets in advance in peak season, dress warm even in summer, and allow half a day for the full experience.

Skiing and snow activities

In winter Gulmarg becomes one of Asia's finest skiing destinations, with powder snow and slopes for beginners and experts. From December to March you can ski, snowboard, ride a snowmobile or simply play in the snow. Local instructors and gear are available for first timers.

Other things to do

Beyond the Gondola, enjoy a walk or pony ride across the meadows, visit St Mary's Church and the Maharani Temple, and see the Gulmarg golf course, one of the highest in the world. In summer the meadows fill with wild flowers.

How to reach and where to stay

Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, roughly a 2 hour drive. Most travellers visit on a day trip, but staying a night lets you enjoy the quiet mornings. We arrange hotels in Gulmarg as well as day trips with a private cab and driver.
