How many days do you need?

A comfortable Kashmir trip is 5 to 6 nights. This covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg without rushing. With 3 to 4 nights you can still enjoy Srinagar and one or two day trips. Add 2 to 3 nights if you want to include Gurez, Doodhpathri or the Ladakh route.

A sample 6 night itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Srinagar, Shikara ride on Dal Lake, stay in a houseboat. Day 2: Gulmarg day trip with the Gondola cable car. Day 3: Pahalgam, visit Betaab Valley and Aru. Day 4: Pahalgam to Chandanwari or a leisure day. Day 5: Sonmarg and Thajiwas Glacier. Day 6: Srinagar Mughal Gardens and local markets, departure. Your driver stays with you throughout.

Local tips for a smooth trip

Book a private cab rather than shared transport so you travel on your own schedule. Carry layers even in summer as evenings get cool. Keep one buffer day for weather in winter. Try the local Wazwan cuisine and buy Pashmina, saffron and dry fruits from trusted shops. Mobile networks work well in Srinagar and main towns.
