The Amarnath Yatra is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimages, to the holy ice lingam in a cave high in the Kashmir mountains. Here is a practical overview for pilgrims.
The two routes
There are two main routes. The traditional Pahalgam route via Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni is longer and more gradual over a few days. The Baltal route near Sonmarg is shorter and steeper and can be done in a day or two.
Registration
The Yatra requires advance registration through the official Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, along with a compulsory health certificate. Register early as slots are limited during the season.
Helicopter option
Helicopter services operate on the Baltal and Pahalgam sectors during the Yatra, cutting the trek down significantly for those with limited time or health concerns. Book helicopter slots in advance.
Best time and what to carry
The Yatra usually runs for a set period in the monsoon months, often July to August, with exact dates announced each year. Carry warm and waterproof clothing, sturdy shoes, basic medicines and identification.
