Beyond the famous circuit, Kashmir hides quiet valleys that most tourists never see. Bangus and Lolab in the Kupwara district are two of the finest, with wide meadows, dense forests and a real sense of remoteness.

Bangus Valley

Bangus is a broad bowl of grassland ringed by pine covered ridges, split into Large Bangus and Small Bangus. It is a place for meadow walks, photography and pure quiet, with almost no crowds.

Lolab Valley

Lolab is a green, oval valley of orchards, forests, springs and small villages, sometimes called the land of love and beauty. Nearby spots include the Kalaroos caves and the Lavnag forest.

Best time to visit

May to September is ideal, when the meadows are green and the roads are clear. These are higher, forested areas, so carry a light layer even in summer.

How to reach

Both valleys lie in the Kupwara district, roughly 100 to 130 km from Srinagar, a scenic drive of around 3 to 4 hours. They are best explored with a local driver who knows the forest roads.
