Chandanwari sits roughly 16 km beyond Pahalgam, where the Lidder valley narrows and the road ends against snow-capped slopes. Best known as the traditional starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, it is where pilgrims and trekkers set off toward the holy cave. Even outside the yatra season, you come here for the famous snow bridge that arches over the river for much of the year, the crisp mountain air, and pony rides through pine-clad terrain. It is a short, scenic drive from Pahalgam and makes an easy half-day outing for anyone exploring the wider Lidder region.

Things to do

Best time to visit: May to September is ideal, with pleasant days and the snow bridge still intact in early summer. During the Amarnath Yatra window, usually July to August, the area is busiest and most animated. Winter brings heavy snow and the road is often closed, so plan around the warmer months for reliable access.

How to reach: Chandanwari lies about 16 km from Pahalgam, roughly a 45 minute to one hour drive depending on road and traffic conditions. Pahalgam itself is around 90 km from Srinagar, close to a two and a half to three hour drive. Hire a local taxi from Pahalgam for the final stretch, as it is a straightforward, well-travelled road. How to visit Chandanwari

Chandanwari is reached from Pahalgam by the local union taxi, usually in a round with Betaab and Aru. The snow bridge is a short walk from the road head and lasts into summer in most years. During the Amarnath Yatra (usually July and August), access is controlled and the road gets busy, so plan Chandanwari outside yatra days if you can.

Beyond Chandanwari

The yatra route continues to Pissu Top, Sheshnag lake and Panjtarni towards the cave. Only registered yatris go beyond Chandanwari in the yatra season.
