Quick Answer: Awantipora has two ruined stone temples built in the 9th century, roughly 30 km from Srinagar on the road to Pahalgam. They make an easy 45 minute stop on the way to or from Pahalgam and are best in good light.

What are the Awantipora ruins?

Two temple complexes in stone, the Avantiswami and Avantishwara temples, with carved courtyards that show early Kashmiri architecture.

How do I fit them into a trip?

They lie on the main road to Pahalgam, so a stop on the way costs little time and adds history to a scenic day.

When is the best time?

Any dry season, with clear light for photos. Winter is cold, but the site stays open.

What else is nearby?

In October and November the road passes saffron fields, so an autumn Pahalgam trip can combine both sights easily.

How long has Awantipora been in ruins?

The temples were damaged by earthquakes and, by some historical accounts, later conflict over the centuries since their construction in the 9th century, so what remains today is a partial structure rather than a complete temple. Conservation work by the Archaeological Survey of India has stabilised the site, but it is visited as a ruin, not a restored monument.
