The Srinagar to Leh highway is one of the most spectacular road journeys in India, climbing from the green Kashmir valley over high passes into the stark beauty of Ladakh.
The route
The road runs Srinagar to Sonmarg, over Zoji La pass, then Drass, Kargil, and on past Lamayuru and the Indus valley into Leh. It is usually done over two days with an overnight halt in Kargil to help with acclimatisation.
Key stops along the way
Highlights include Sonmarg and Zoji La, the Drass war memorial, Kargil town, the moonlike landscape of Lamayuru, and the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers near Nimmu. Each stop is worth a short pause for photos.
Best time to travel
The highway is open roughly from late May or June to October, depending on snow at Zoji La. June to September is the reliable window. The route closes in winter.
Tips for the journey
Start early, carry warm layers as passes are cold even in summer, drink plenty of water and rest at Kargil to acclimatise before Leh. A comfortable vehicle with an experienced mountain driver makes a big difference on this route.
