Sonmarg, the meadow of gold, sits at around 2,800 metres where the Sindh river winds between snow peaks and pine forests. It is one of the most scenic stops in Kashmir and the gateway to Ladakh.

Thajiwas Glacier

The main attraction is the Thajiwas Glacier, a short pony ride or gentle trek from the main meadow. Snow lingers here well into summer, so families can enjoy the snow even in June and July. Local ponywallahs and guides are available at fixed points.

Zoji La Pass and the road to Ladakh

Sonmarg is the last major town in Kashmir before Zoji La, the high pass that connects the valley to Ladakh. If you plan a Srinagar to Leh road trip, Sonmarg is the natural first halt with dramatic mountain scenery on the way up.

Things to do in Sonmarg

Enjoy a pony ride to the glacier, walk along the Sindh river, try river rafting in season, and drive to nearby spots like Baltal and the Vishansar and Krishansar lakes on longer treks. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek also begins near here.

Best time to visit and how to reach

Sonmarg is best from May to October, as the Zoji La route stays closed through deep winter. It is about 80 km from Srinagar, roughly a 2.5 hour drive along a beautiful valley road. Most travellers visit on a day trip, though a night stay lets you enjoy quiet mornings.
