The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is one of the most beautiful high altitude treks in India, passing a string of alpine lakes set among green meadows and snow peaks. Here is a clear overview for anyone planning it.

The route

The classic trek runs from Sonmarg to Naranag over about 6 to 7 days, crossing meadows and passes to reach lakes like Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and the twin Gangbal and Nundkol lakes below Mount Harmukh. Each day brings a new lake and a new valley.

Difficulty and fitness

This is a moderate to challenging trek with daily walks of 5 to 7 hours and passes above 4,000 metres. Good fitness and some prior trekking experience help. Acclimatise well and walk at a steady pace.

Best time to do it

The window is roughly early July to mid September, when the snow has cleared and the meadows are green and full of wild flowers. July and August are the most popular months.

What to carry

Pack sturdy trekking shoes, layered warm clothing, a rain shell, a good sleeping bag, sun protection and a basic first aid kit. Nights are cold even in summer. Going with a registered local operator and porters or ponies makes it far safer and easier.
