Doodhpathri, the valley of milk, is a lush meadow of rolling grass, pine forests and cold streams, and one of the easiest offbeat day trips from Srinagar. It is far less crowded than Gulmarg or Pahalgam.
Why the name valley of milk
The name comes from the milky white streams that rush over the meadows, fed by mountain springs. In spring and summer the grass is a vivid green and dotted with wild flowers.
Things to do
Walk the wide meadows, sit by the streams, enjoy a picnic, and take a pony ride to higher viewpoints. It is a relaxed, nature first destination with few built up attractions, which is exactly why people love it.
Best time to visit
April to September is ideal, with the greenest meadows from June to August. In winter the higher road can be blocked by snow.
How to reach
Doodhpathri is about 42 km from Srinagar in the Budgam district, roughly a 1.5 hour drive, which makes it a comfortable half day or full day trip.
