Katra is the base town for the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in the Jammu region, a popular start or add on for Kashmir trips.
Katra sits at the foot of the Trikuta hills, about 50 km from Jammu (roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road). Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station connects to Delhi by Vande Bharat and to Srinagar by the Vande Bharat through the Pir Panjal, about 3 hours. Most pilgrims spend one night in Katra, either before the climb or after darshan.
