Pahalgam is one of Kashmir's most loved valley towns, set where the Lidder river rushes through pine forests and open meadows. Once a shepherds' village, it is now a favourite base for families, honeymooners and trekkers, and the traditional starting point for the Amarnath Yatra. From here you can branch out to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, or simply sit by the Lidder and let the mountain air do its work. With its riverside walks, pony trails and easygoing pace, Pahalgam rewards both a quick day trip and a longer, slower stay.
