Naranag is a peaceful hamlet in the Ganderbal district, best known for its cluster of ancient stone temple ruins dating back over a thousand years. Set beside the gurgling Wangath stream and ringed by forested slopes, these grey stone shrines speak of Kashmir's old architectural heritage. Beyond its history, Naranag is a favourite base for trekkers, marking the start of the popular trail towards the alpine Gangabal lakes below Mount Harmukh. Whether you come for the quiet ruins, the cool mountain air or the promise of high meadows ahead, Naranag rewards you with an unhurried, offbeat Kashmir experience.

Things to do

Best time to visit: The best months are late spring to early autumn, roughly May through September, when the trails are open and the weather is mild. This window suits both temple visits and treks to the higher lakes. Winters are cold and snowy, making the high routes difficult.

How to reach: Naranag is reached via Ganderbal and the Kangan area. From Srinagar it is about a two to two and a half hour drive of roughly 50 km, heading towards Kangan and then turning off towards the village. A private cab is the easiest option, as public transport is limited.
