Tucked deep in the north near the Line of Control, Gurez Valley is one of Kashmir's most untouched frontiers. The Kishanganga river carves through pine slopes while the striking Habba Khatoon peak, named after Kashmir's poetess queen, watches over the landscape. Home to the warm Dard Shin community with their distinctive wooden log homes, Gurez offers a rare glimpse of old Himalayan life. Reaching it means crossing the high Razdan Pass, so the valley stays hidden under snow for much of the year and opens only in the warmer months, rewarding travellers with quiet meadows and unspoilt views.
Best time to visit: Gurez is a summer destination. The road over Razdan Pass typically opens from late May or June and stays accessible through September or October, offering green meadows and pleasant days. Heavy snow closes the route in winter, so plan your trip for the warmer months.
How to reach: Gurez sits north of Bandipora. From Srinagar it is roughly a five to six hour drive of about 120 to 130 km, first heading to Bandipora and then climbing over Razdan Pass into the valley. A private cab or shared taxi is the practical way in, and permits or ID checks may apply near the frontier.
