The Maharani Temple, also known as Mohineshwar Shivalaya, crowns a small hill above Gulmarg and is visible across much of the meadow. Commissioned in the early twentieth century during the era of Kashmir's Dogra royalty, this Shiva temple is one of Gulmarg's most recognisable landmarks. A short climb rewards you with sweeping views over the golf greens, the meadow and the encircling peaks. Its bright form standing above the bowl of Gulmarg makes it a favourite for photographs, a quiet darshan and a gentle bit of exercise on an otherwise easy holiday.
Best time to visit: April to June and September to October are ideal, with pleasant weather and clear views from the hilltop. In winter, December to February, the surroundings turn snowy and beautiful, though the climb can be slippery, so tread carefully.
How to reach: The temple stands on a hillock within Gulmarg, reached by a short uphill walk from the meadow near the main area. Gulmarg is about 50 to 55 km from Srinagar, roughly a 2 to 2.5 hour drive via Tangmarg, with taxis available from Srinagar and Tangmarg.
