Astanmarg is a quiet upland meadow on the outskirts of Srinagar, and it rewards you with one of the widest, most under-visited views of the Kashmir Valley. From its grassy shoulder you can look out over the city, the shimmer of Dal Lake, and the ring of mountains that cradles them. It stays refreshingly free of crowds, which makes it a favourite for a short morning drive, a picnic, or an unhurried sunset. Shepherds still graze their flocks here in the warmer months, and the open, rolling terrain feels a world away from the busy Boulevard, though it sits so close to town.
Best time to visit: Late spring through autumn, roughly April to October, is ideal, with clear skies and green meadows. Early summer offers the freshest grass, while September and October bring crisp air and golden light. Winter can be cold and the approach road may be slippery after snow, so warmer months are safer and far more comfortable.
How to reach: Astanmarg lies just on the outskirts of Srinagar and is an easy short drive from the city centre, usually well under an hour depending on your starting point and traffic. Hire a cab or self-drive up the meadow road. Since it is so close to town, it works well as a half-day outing combined with other Srinagar sights.
