Often called the Niagara of Kashmir, Aharbal is a powerful waterfall set amid dense pine and fir forests in the Kulgam district. Here the Veshaw river narrows and plunges through a rocky gorge, sending up a fine mist and a steady roar that fills the surrounding woods. The cool, green setting makes it a lovely spot for a day out, whether you want to picnic by the water, wander the forest paths or simply watch the cascade thunder below. Less crowded than the big-name meadows, Aharbal offers an easygoing escape into some of south Kashmir's most scenic and refreshing countryside.
Best time to visit: Spring and summer, roughly April through September, are ideal when snowmelt keeps the falls full and the forest is lush and green. Autumn is pleasant too. Winter can be cold and the approach slushy, so warmer months make for the most comfortable visit.
How to reach: Aharbal sits in the Kulgam district of south Kashmir. From Srinagar it is about a two to two and a half hour drive of roughly 70 km, heading south towards Shopian and Kulgam and then on to the falls. A private cab is the most convenient way to reach this offbeat spot.
