Achabal is one of Kashmir's loveliest Mughal gardens, laid out around 1620 by Nur Jahan, the empress of Emperor Jahangir, in Anantnag district south of Srinagar. Fed by a powerful natural spring, the garden channels water down a series of terraces, cascades, and fountains framed by chinar trees and formal flowerbeds. The steady rush of the spring gives Achabal a calm, cooling atmosphere even on a warm afternoon. It is smaller and gentler than Nishat or Shalimar in Srinagar, which is part of its charm, and it makes a rewarding stop when you are exploring south Kashmir and the Anantnag countryside.

Things to do

Best time to visit: Spring and summer, roughly April to September, are the best months, when the flowerbeds are in bloom and the spring runs strong. Autumn is also beautiful as the chinar leaves turn amber and gold. The garden stays pleasant through the warmer season, so plan a daytime visit for the fullest colour and flow.

How to reach: Achabal is about 58 km south of Srinagar in Anantnag district, roughly a one and a half to two hour drive depending on road conditions. Take the highway towards Anantnag and continue to Achabal town. Taxis and shared cabs run this route, and it pairs naturally with a trip towards Pahalgam.
