Mata Vaishno Devi is among the most revered pilgrimages in India, a cave shrine nestled high in the Trikuta hills above Katra. Devotees reach the sanctum after a climb of roughly 12 to 13 km from Katra, walking a well maintained track lined with rest points, eateries, and prayer chants echoing through the hills. Inside the holy cave you seek darshan of the Mata in the form of three natural rock pindis. The journey blends devotion with the crisp mountain air of the lower Himalayas, drawing millions of pilgrims through every season of the year.
Best time to visit: March to October offers the most comfortable trekking weather, with spring and autumn especially pleasant. Navratri seasons see huge crowds and a charged spiritual atmosphere. Winters from December to February can be cold with occasional snow near the top, so warm clothing is essential if you go then.
How to reach: The pilgrimage begins at Katra, which is around 45 to 50 km from Jammu, roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive by taxi or bus. From Katra the shrine is reached on foot over about 12 to 13 km, or with the help of ponies, palkis, battery cars, and the ropeway for the upper stretch. Jammu is the nearest major rail and air hub.
