Winter turns Kashmir into a white wonderland. From December to February the valley sees snowfall, frozen lakes and some of the best skiing in Asia. Here is how to plan a winter trip.
Skiing in Gulmarg
Gulmarg is the star of winter Kashmir, with powder snow, the high Gondola cable car and slopes for beginners and experts. You can ski, snowboard, ride a snowmobile or take a beginner lesson with a local instructor.
Snowfall in Srinagar and Pahalgam
Srinagar looks magical under snow, with the Dal Lake often partly frozen and the Mughal Gardens dusted white. Pahalgam and Sonmarg also receive fresh snow and are quieter, good for couples who want calm scenery.
What to pack for winter
Carry heavy woollens, a good down jacket, waterproof shoes with grip, gloves, a woollen cap and thermal wear. Temperatures often drop below zero, especially at night and in Gulmarg.
Tips for a smooth winter trip
Keep a buffer day for weather, as heavy snow can occasionally affect roads. Book heated hotels, start day trips early, and travel with an experienced local driver who knows snow routes.
