The Shaliganga is the lively mountain stream that gives Doodhpathri much of its character, its fast, foaming water often compared to spilt milk as it races across the meadows. Fed by snowmelt from the higher slopes, it winds through open pasture and pine, offering some of the prettiest riverside spots in the Budgam highlands. You come here to sit by the water, dip your feet on a warm day, and enjoy the sound of the current against a backdrop of green hills. Easily reached as part of a Doodhpathri visit, the Shaliganga is a gentle, photogenic highlight rather than a destination that demands a long journey of its own.

Things to do

Best time to visit: Late spring through summer, roughly May to September, is best, when snowmelt keeps the stream full and the meadows around it are green. Water levels are highest in early summer, so take care near the faster stretches. Winter access is limited by snow, so plan your visit alongside the warmer Doodhpathri season.

How to reach: The Shaliganga runs through Doodhpathri, about 40 km from Srinagar and roughly a one and a half to two hour drive via Budgam. Reach the Doodhpathri meadows first, from where the stream is a short walk across the grass. A private taxi is the simplest way to get there, and Happy Jacks Tours can include it in a Doodhpathri day trip on +91-9419244962.
