Doodhpathri, the valley of milk, is a broad sweep of alpine meadow about 40 km from Srinagar in the Budgam district. It stays quieter and less crowded than Gulmarg or Pahalgam, which is much of its charm. Rolling green pastures are threaded by the Shaliganga stream, whose fast, frothy water is said to have inspired the milky name. Ringed by pine forest and gentle slopes, it is a place for slow walks, meadow picnics and long views rather than busy tourist infrastructure. For travellers who want unspoilt Kashmiri countryside within an easy day trip of the city, Doodhpathri is hard to beat.
Best time to visit: April to September is the sweet spot, when the meadows are lush and the weather is mild. Spring and summer bring wildflowers and green pastures, while early autumn offers clear, crisp days. Winter blankets the valley in snow and access can be limited, so most visitors come in the warmer half of the year.
How to reach: Doodhpathri is about 40 km from Srinagar, usually a one and a half to two hour drive through Budgam. The road passes small villages and farmland before opening onto the meadows. There is limited public transport, so a private taxi is the easiest option. Happy Jacks Tours can arrange a day trip from Srinagar on +91-9419244962.
